General Questions

While both are sword-based martial arts, Haidong Gumdo and Kendo are quite different. Kendo is Japanese and focuses primarily on sparring with protective gear. Haidong Gumdo, on the other hand, is a Korean martial art that takes a holistic approach, combining sword techniques, patterns, cutting practice, meditation, and breathing exercises. It’s not just about combat—it’s about physical, mental, and spiritual growth.

Absolutely! Most people who join Haidong Gumdo have no prior experience with swords or martial arts. Our classes are designed to guide you step-by-step, whether you’re a complete beginner or have previous martial art experience.

No prior experience is necessary. Haidong Gumdo is accessible to everyone, regardless of their background. Our instructors will help you learn at your own pace.

On average, it takes about 3.5 years to achieve your Black Belt in Haidong Gumdo. There are 8 coloured belt levels to progress through, and most clubs hold 3 gradings per year. However, the timeline can vary depending on your dedication, practice, and previous experience—and that’s perfectly okay! Everyone progresses at their own pace, and the journey is just as important as the destination.

If you have previous martial art experience and want to get your Black Belt faster, contact us for information on upcoming Black Belt Seminars where you will achieve your Black Belt in 3 months!
